Collection of New EditionNew Edition's early, Jackson 5-inspired material made them theforerunners of two generations of teen pop (most of which was geared towhite audiences). As they matured and progressed, they laid much of thegroundwork for the fusion of hip-hop and R&B known as new jackswing.

In fact, after New Edition drifted apart, all of its members hadat least some significant success outside the group as part of the newjack movement, which helped ensure that their original incarnation wouldbe remembered for much more than the bubblegum urban soul that madetheir name.New Edition was formed in the Roxbury section of Boston, MA, by RickyBell, Michael Bivins, and Bobby Brown, who began singing together in1978 while still in elementary school, hoping to perform for pocketcash. They eventually recruited friend Ralph Tresvant as a fourthmember, and after winning a talent show in 1980, also added RonnieDeVoe. More talent show victories followed, including a prestigious gigat the local Strand Theater, where they performed the Jackson 5's 'TheLove You Save.' They were discovered by writer/producer/impresarioMaurice Starr, who signed the group to his small Streetwise label inhopes of launching a Jackson 5 phenomenon for the '80s.

'Candy Girl,' asong Starr co-wrote for the group, was released as their first single in1983, when the members ranged in age from 13 to 15. Despite a lack ofmajor-label interest in the group, 'Candy Girl' was a smash, topping theR&B charts. Their debut album, also titled Candy Girl, spawned twomore R&B hits in 'Popcorn Love' and 'Is This the End?,' and MCAoffered the group a deal. Starr, however, wanted the group to remainwith Streetwise; New Edition summarily fired him as their manager andsigned with MCA.

Starr attempted to sue the group for their name, unsuccessfully claiming that 'New Edition' actually referred to a wholenew style of pop music he'd created. Starr, of course, would go on tostrike it rich with a similar concept, assembling a quintet of whiteteenagers he dubbed New Kids on the Block.New Edition, meanwhile, released their eponymous MCA debut in 1984 andscored their biggest pop hit with the Top Five smash 'Cool It Now,'which ended with a short rap section. The Ray Parker, Jr.-penned 'Mr.Telephone Man' soon became their third R&B chart-topper, and thegroup had reached full-fledged teen idol status. Yet they were growingup fast, as demonstrated on their next album, 1985's All for Love. Notonly were their voices changing, but their material was becoming moreadult, with harder-edged funk and more mature romantic ballads. Laterthat year, they also released a holiday album, Christmas All Over theWorld, and struck an endorsement deal with Coke.

However, rumors ofBrown's growing dissatisfaction proved true and he left for a solocareer in 1986. Temporarily down to a quartet, the rest of the grouprecorded the covers album Under the Blue Moon, a set of vintage doo wopand R&B numbers from the '50s and '60s; it produced a hit revival ofthe Penguins' 'Earth Angel.' Brown's replacement came in the form of Johnny Gill, a deep-voicedfriend of the group who'd been recording as a solo artist without muchluck. Gill made his debut on the 1989 album Heart Break, which found NewEdition working with star producers Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis. The movepaid immediate dividends, as they scored several R&B hits from thealbum, including the number one 'Can You Stand the Rain.' Meanwhile,Brown had become a superstar with his second album, the new jack swinglandmark Don't Be Cruel. Marvel heroes game download 18.

Feeling vindicated by Heart Break, New Editionsplit up to work on other projects. Gill returned to his solo career, with considerably more success this time around, and Tresvant also wentsolo.

The remainder of the group teamed as Bell Biv DeVoe and wound uphaving greater success than anyone save Brown; their debut album,Poison, was another new jack style-setter and Bivins' interest indeveloping new talent gave Boyz II Men their big break.By the mid-'90s, new jack swing was giving way to new fusions of hip-hopand soul that were alternately more organic or aggressive. Althoughtheir status as innovators was secure, many of the New Edition splinteracts had a hard time keeping up and maintaining their career momentum. Thus, given their individually positive reputations, it made sense forthe group to announce its triumphant reunion, with all six membersparticipating in what was essentially an R&B supergroup. The publicloved the idea; when the comeback album Home Again was finally releasedin 1996, it debuted at number one, and the first single, 'Hit Me Off,'was a smash, hitting number one on the R&B charts. The follow-up,'I'm Still in Love With You,' was another big hit, and the groupembarked on a blockbuster tour that, while popular, found relationshipsbetween some of the members fraying. After the tour, New Editionreturned to their various prior projects, with the prospect of anyfuture reunions looking dim. Those prospects increased significantlywhen it was learned that P.

So, after all the love and hype that New Edition and its six members received this week by way of a made-for-TV BET miniseries about their lives and careers, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame and a new album ( Three Stripes) by offshoot group Bell Biv DeVoe that just dropped today, January 27, djrobblog decided to pay tribute with a special countdowna djroblist of their 50 Greatest Jams! The members of New Edition: Ronnie DeVoe, Ricky Bell, Johnny Gill, Bobby Brown, Michael Bivins, and Ralph TresvantThese are the tunes that djrobblog believes are the 50 greatest by either New Edition, Bobby Brown, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant or Bell Biv DeVoe, in order from the 50th to the best, based on the typical criteria: chart performance, quality, critical acclaim, popularity, influence and enduranceand a bit of opinion. To be eligible, the songs had to be recorded by New Edition or any one of its members (after being part of the group). That last part means that Johnny Gill’s recordings before he was a member of N.E. (i.e., before 1987) don’t qualify. Also, a song didn’t have to be released as a single to make this list. Very popular album cuts are eligible. That’s an exception that usually doesn’t exist for djroblists, but one I felt I should make for this one given some of the great tunes that otherwise wouldn’t have made it.But enough with all the formalitieswho and what will be #1?

Is it a New Edition tune? Or maybe it’s one by BBD, or Ralph or Johnny or Bobby. There’s only one way to find out: strap yourself in, sit back and get ready for a whirlwind ride with this special tribute to New Edition, Bell Biv DeVoe, Johnny Gill, Ralph Tresvant and Bobby Brown – a comprehensive countdown of their 50 Greatest Jamstogether and apart!
