My problem with them is an unlimited supply from a vendor. I am writing this as I got criticisms for this view in another thread, and desire to explain myself more.I understand the use of Life gems, how they differ from Estus, and third importance to the game. I came to DS2 from Bloodborne so I get the idea of a renewable resource for healing.
Life Gems are meant to be an on the fly life boost to power through, either a tough spot or to keep you going until that next bonfire. Having an unlimited supply that cost little in the way of souls breaks that idea. Life Gems now become a main and basically free healing source.veven in Bloodborne the blood vials became more expensive as you went on to encourage you to not be addicted to buying them.I am not against unlimited life gems, but I feel they should be farmed, and not purchased. This gives people an ability to get them while also practicing to get better with the characters they build. Yes I understand this would be needless grind, but that is a part of all souls games. We grind for ugrade material, we grind for item drops, we grind for consumables. Grinding for life gems would not add significantly more grind time to those who want them.I get that there is an idea that having an unlimited number of life gems easily available gives some players more sense that they don't need to turtle behind shields, but stat allocation does the same thing.
A player can play DS2 in a very agresive manner, and not need life Gems. Adp, and Atn both up your Doge abilities, and dropping more into health so you can tank hits does the same. You don't have to be good at souls games to be able to play through with out an unlimited supply of Life Gems, and I feel having that crutch will stop people from improving. Also the depopulation mechanic is also there to help players when they get stuck.I understand why some people say life gems break the game, and yes I realize the easy answer is if you don't like it just don't buy them. Except for very specific builds I never do. Still the unlimited easy access to life gems, even if they are the weakest ones is game breaking in many ways when you can have enough to easy crush three and never have to worry about your life.
That is game breaking for what most consider a souls game. Health management goes out the window when you have an easy access to unlimited health recovery. This is a criticisms that I agree with. Does it ruin a great game? No, but we can still look at parts of the game we love and say, 'Yes potentially this could have been implemented in a better way'.
I think Lifegems are part and parcel of the game design philosophy. Specifically, in every other game in the series it's generally pretty easy to just run past everything. DS2 made the decision to place generic enemies to make this tricky. This in turn makes chip damage (at least) nearly inevitable so you are faced with either going into a boss fight down on Estus (even more than other games) or despawning.
Where To Buy Life Gems Dark Souls 2
Neither is a great option. And I can't believe anybody who has had the joy of blood vial farming thinking, you know what DS2 needs is more of this. There's a saying (attributed to a number of people that, 'For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple, and wrong'In this case without a substantial change to game design you introduce tedium that produces the same outcome. Android os for pc. I like that the philosophy of DS2 was to make things simpler and jettison more instances of grind.Complicated upgrade tree that locks your weapon on a certain upgrade, replaced with a simple infusion system that requires only 1 consumable.
Having to do math when equipping armor, replaced with a displayed%. Having to farm all manner of titanite, replaced with the ability to buy unlimited normal titanite (except slabs) by the time you reach end game. Having to carefully maximize skill points as you level up, replaced with the ability to respec with soul vessels. You also have to remember that the no resting at bonfire run is a challenge that was in DS2 from the start, unlimited lifegems is pretty much the only way it would be possible. I would agree with that to an extent. You can play through all of the games in your style and pacw. Yes some styles are far easier to play through then others, but how you play and beat the games is up to you.
That is why I love these games. My playing a Dex based Dodge character is just as viable as someone who only puts points into magic and faith to be a pure caster. Then that crazy boxing build of DS2. They all have wildly different play play styles, but can all be used to beat these games.
The pace of DS2, and all the Souls borne games is based upon how you choose to play the game.
